The Annual Club Awards and Club Championship trophies were presented to players of Almondsbury Tennis Club before members enjoyed a celebratory supper and a game of skittles on Saturday 25th October. The Club Member of the Year Award went to Becci Quick, a member who joined the club as a junior and has played for the Ladies first team for several years. Club Chairman Maggie Tyrrell said “Becci has shown long-term commitment to her tennis at the club and is a good role model for our young players. This year she stepped in as Ladies Captain at short notice and with calm efficiency organised and supported the players and teams. We’re pleased to be able to recognise her efforts with this award”.

Ladies and Men’s Players of the Year Awards were presented to Aud Heyden-Dodd and Wayne Russell as players who not only have a good winning record in the league teams but always play to a consistently high standard and support the teams in whatever way they can. The Men’s and Ladies League Doubles Awards were presented to the pairs with the best statistics throughout the year in all leagues. Men’s Winners were David Riddle & Yilong Ren and Cath Coombs and Cheryl Freston took the Ladies Award. Aud Heyden-Dodd and Mark Neves were thanked for their work making sure the fixture lists were organised and Tariq Mahmood, John Kimani, Ali Pye, Adam Thierry and Mark Neves thanked for their work on team selection and organisation. Unlike the Club Awards which reflect a year’s club play, the Club Championship trophies are for winning the annual closed tournament. Members enjoyed competing in Singles and Doubles Championship matches throughout August. Top honours in the singles went to the club’s Ladies Captain Becci Quick, who beat Cath Coombs in the final while Matt Bradley became Men’s Champion with James Lewis the runner up. There were some strong doubles players who came through the draw and Becci Quick featured again in both the Ladies and Mixed Doubles finals, winning the Ladies Doubles with partner Sarah Coombs. She couldn’t quite make it a hat-trick as no2 seeds Aud Heyden-Dodd and Yilong Ren proved too strong for her and partner Tim Sanday. The men’s doubles also featured Yilong Ren who, along with James Lewis took the Men’s Doubles title. |
