Past Events

Ellett Wins Trophy for 2nd Year

Ryan Ellett put in a strong performance to win the Mens Singles Title in the Almondsbury Open Senior Tournament for the second year running.  Runner up Paul Mortimore, Almondsbury's Men's Captain, fought hard to make inroads into Ellett's game but the young player from Keynsham won in convincing style. Mortimore can be pleased with his week however as reaching the final was a great achievement and earlier in the week he had won the Mixed Doubles event with his partner Sarah Birch.

In the consolation event two Almondsbury players fought out the final with Peter Jennings the eventual winner with Andy Alhadeff runner up.

Annual Senior Tournament

The final of Almondsbury Tennis Club’s Annual Open Senior Tournament was played on Sunday 13th June between Ryan Ellett (Avon) and John Bult (S. Wales). The tournament, in its 10th year, once again attracted players from a wide area to provide tennis of a high standard in every match. This was Ellett’s first appearance at the event but even though still only 17 yrs old he played with a maturity that meant even in close games he emerged the winner and didn’t lose a set throughout the tournament. In the semi-final Almondsbury’s experienced Tariq Mahmood couldn’t break down Ellett’s game and in the final, even though every game was close fought, he overcame top seed John Bult, 6-1, 6-2.

League Tennis

Avon Summer Mixed League

Two teams have been entered into this new League which starts on July 30th. This League is a welcome new innovation filling the previous gap between Summer and Winter League

Men's Veterans League

A team has been entered into the Men's Veterans League starting on Aug 1st 2010. Tariq Mahmood is organising and will be pleased to hear from members over 40yrs whi wish to take part. New members will also be welcomed to the team.

Aegon Team Tennis 2010 - Open
The club has entered one mens' team into the Aegon League 2010 (formerly National Club League). Matches consist of 4 singles and two doubles rubbers and start on April 17th. Anyone interested in taking part should contact the team captain, Tariq Mahmood. Click here for contact details.

Avon Summer League 2010
Three Mens' and three Ladies' teams were entered into the Avon Summer League which ended on July 17th. The Mens 2nd & 3rd teams were both successful in gaining promotion while the 1st team put in a creditable performance and maintained their position. The Ladies Teams were devastated by injury and did well to maintain their League positions under very difficult circumstances. Match practice continues and John Kimani is currently running workshops for team members on Monday evenings from 7.30pm  Members and prospective members who are interested in playing in the teams are welcome to come to the session.

Aegon Team Tennis - Junior
Teams at 8U, 9U, 10U and 12U were entered into Aegon Team Tennis Avon. There were notable successes for the mini teams with the 10U beating both Kings and Team Bath to gain equal points at the end of the season. Only the lack of an Almondsbury girl to take part in this mixed event meant that Almondsbury were given penalty points so allowing Team Bath to top the 10U table. For many young players the leagues are an ideal start to playing competitive tennis but this relies on commitment from both players and parents. Thank you to those parents who gave their support the teams with transport and supervision so allowing the matches to take place. The Head Coach organises the teams and can provide more information about future junior leagues. Click here for contact details.

Avon Winter League
Avon Winter League got under way in October and ended 31st March 2010. Once again the club fielded three teams and once again are maintaining their positions in the League. Players interested in playing in the teams should contact team captains or turn up to match practice on Monday nights at 7.30pm. Click here for contact details.

Senior League 2010
Mens & Ladies Veterans League teams will be entered into the Avon League which starts in August.

Summer League 2009
The three Mens and three Ladies teams in the Avon Summer League had mixed success this year. Well done to the Mens and Ladies 2nd teams which gained promotion whilst other teams maintaining their positions. The club expects to enter the same number of teams in the League in 2010.
